Virtual Office v Executive Office – Which is Better, Part 2

Virtual office versus actual office… which one is better?

With your name on the door and a nice big executive desk, your office displays your prestigious position as a business owner or entrepreneur. But these days, with so many people opting for a virtual office situation, preferring pajamas to a suit and tie, you may wonder if a physical office is becoming a thing of the past.

Granted, a great office does present a polished, professional image to clients and colleagues. But it has a price tag. Fortunately, you can get that polished, professional image, complete with receptionist, exquisite conference room, and teleconferencing at Delray Executive Suites for a fraction of the cost of a traditional space.

So, is a physical space what you need? This week, we look at the same four areas that we assessed with the virtual office scenario in Part 1: structure, commute, distractions, and setting. Here are the benefits and the drawbacks of working in an actual office.

Structure

PRO

You know when you arrive at the office it’s time get to work. You leave for lunch and then come back and do more work. When you shut the door and head home, you can leave work behind.  With set days and hours of operation, you have a clear work mode which is separate from your personal mode.

CON

It can be harder to schedule personal appointments such as doctor and dentist appointments, kid’s activities, errands and vacation.  Depending on how your office is set up, you may only be able to work when you are physically in that space.

Commute

PRO

Driving to and from work can be a time to prepare for the day ahead and then to decompress after a long day at the office. For some, the commute provides a much-needed transition between work and home. And some people even utilize the time to listen to audio books, which they might not otherwise do.

CON

You have to drive to and from work every day, which takes time. Traffic can be stressful. There is wear and tear on your vehicle you have to account for. The impact on the environment is another consideration in a daily commute to work.

Distractions

PRO

Personality type is the biggest factor when it comes to distraction. For those who consider themselves extroverts, the energy and exchange of ideas that come from interacting with others makes an actual office a good option.

CON

Being around other people all day, every day makes it difficult for some people to focus on a project. And, while you may be able to close your office door, you may still hear the muffled sounds of phones ringing and people talking in the hallway.

Setting

PRO

A strictly business atmosphere will encourage a professional demeanor and mindset for entrepreneurs.  And for some types of businesses, a prestigious location for meeting with clients and colleagues is a must.

CON

Depending on where your office is, whether it’s a closed or open office arrangement, who is responsible for décor, and the proximity to co-workers, you may not find the space inspiring or conducive to creativity.
