How to be Indispensable in a Disposable Job Market

ID-10081492

Today it is a bit more difficult to stay in a job when employers are able to be far more selective. After all if you are not working up to speed then it is just as easy to hire a new person from the list of resumes on the bosses’ desk. It doesn’t seem fair that we are asked to do more yet the pay doesn’t seem to get much better and now we are being forced to carry our own benefits in the  U.S. lest we be fined. But there are only two choices as with anything in life and that is to keep moping and complaining or to make it work for us. There are ways to keep gainfully employed by catering to the specific things that employers are looking for.

Old fashioned ideals

Going back to the old-fashioned ideals that are as follows; arrive early and stay late to prove your worth may not get you the raise it used to but at least you will be putting food on your table and that is worth it in and of itself.

Ask for more

No, not ask for more money… ask what more you can do to help out. Employers do not like to pay for people with empty hands, oh no, they want to know that you can help out in another department if need be and if you are in an hourly job you had better do so if you want at least your 36 to 40 hours. No one, by the way is guaranteed 40 hours.

Cross Train

No, not at the gym. Cross train with other departments and skills so that you can do what we just mentioned and the employer knows they can call you in case they lose someone. Also, you will be more likely to be kept on or called back in the event they want to lay off people.

Education

If you don’t have one, get one and if you have one then march into the boss and ask him how your education can help you excel in the company. You may also want to express an interest in whether or not your company will pay to continue your education. You may want to ask also what sort of degrees or certifications they are asking new-hires to have and how you can obtain one. Then step up and ask very candidly if it would help you there and in what way.

In conclusion, these steps are the best way to ensure as well as you can that you have an excellent rapport with your superiors and a way to keep your job.
