Communication styles are completely different with each generation. This subjective is so extensive that many books have been written about it. There are four generations that we are all interacting with at some point business and social situations. Each generation has its own value system. In order to be able to communicate with all types of people, knowing which generation a person is part of is one of many tools that you can use to communicate effectively. All generations are important but living in Florida, it’s particularly important to be able to communicate with people 65 and over since so many people in that age group live here.
Here are some useful facts about this group of people:
- This generation is made up of people born before 1945. They are 65 or older.

- They value money and they respect it.
- They believe in managing from the top down. This is the most efficient way to get things done.
- They are comfortable managing in the same manner as the military. Leaders are the bosses. They are to be respected. The people who work for them are the troops.
- They are to take direction without question. They are given information on a need to know basis. It’s not important for them to know the reasons why something is being done.
- This group believes in always being on time, if not early, to meetings. They appreciate to do lists and schedules. They don’t like surprises and last minute changes.
