Is Work/Life Balance Really Possible?

In the past couple of decades, the business landscape in America has made a dramatic shift. Loyalty to one company for a life-long career is no longer the norm. The number of entrepreneurs and remote workers continues to rise year after year.

This isn’t just true for America. The global economy has changed the face of business around the world. And the fast-paced rate of technological innovation has only served to fuel this dynamic change of pace and direction.

When business becomes mobile and we can work from anywhere, it’s not just our work lives that are transformed, our personal lives are undergoing a dramatic shift as well.

There is plenty of information out there talking about how to balance your work life with your personal life. And, the underlying assumption that goes along with all that information is that it’s possible to have it all.

So, is work/life balance really possible?

The idea is that you can be supers successful in your career, while at the same time, enjoying a robust and fulfilling personal life. When you talk about balance, these two things are on separate sides of the scale. If you strive to achieve a good work/life balance, you have to keep these two sides equal, making sure one doesn’t tip the scale.

The problem with this idea of balancing more than one thing at the same time is that you have to separate them.

What if we used another tern in place of balance? Instead of balancing, what if we were to strive to achieve a blending of our work life and our personal life?

So many people leave corporate jobs to be their own boss and make their own schedule. Flexibility, along with productivity, are what today’s entrepreneurs and business owners are after.

We want to be able to go to our kid’s soccer games and land the next big client. We want the project to stay on time and on budget, but we also want to go on the field trips and have lunch with friends and family.

Taking a look at the movement toward holistic medicine can give us clues as to how to approach work/life blending.

It’s becoming more popular for patients to seek doctors who will consider the whole person rather than just treating isolated symptoms. By looking at how one course of treatment will affect the entire body, we can manage the treatment of a whole person better than if we consider only one aspect of care.

When we consider a holistic approach to our lives as it relates to work, family, social, recreation, entertainment and even spirituality, we see the need to make all the parts work cohesively and not try to separate them from each other. Blending is about considering how each part of our lives affects the others and make decisions that are good for the entire human, not just one piece.

That’s the goal, isn’t it, to seamlessly blend all aspects of our lives together for the benefit of the whole person? Maybe just looking at it this way rather than trying to balance isolated pieces of our lives is the first step toward achieving the work/life blending that we so desire.
